Spectacle Collection

One in seven people of the population of the third world countries, needs spectacles so that they may experience the same level of sight that we take for granted.

The lack of proper vision may be caused by malnutrition, lack of Vitamin A, hereditary factors, disease or a combination of these factors.

For many years, Lions Clubs International have been collecting used spectacles & after cleaning, sorting & grading, they are sent to Lions Clubs in South America, Africa, India & many other third world countries where they are desperately needed. The spectacles are always given free of charge to the recipient & there are millions of sight-saving stories made possible by someone’s old spectacles.

A recycling centre has been established at Redcliff in Queensland, one of eleven centres in the world established by Lions. Over 1 million pairs of glasses have been shipped overseas in the last 12 years.

Ballina Lions have been involved in collecting spectacles for over 20 years. In that time several thousands of pairs have been sent to the recycling centre. Glasses are collected from optometrists, opportunity shops & members of the public by Lions members. Glasses can be left at these places or with any Lion member.

“ONE PAIR OF GLASSES CAN CHANGE A PERSONS LIFE”.
